First Impressions

“It is only the first encounter that a face makes its full impression on us.”   –Arthur Schopenhauer (German philosopher, 1788-1860)

Hello!

Things Printmakers Like –

First Impressions

Printmakers thrive on making and giving first impressions–  every first impression pulled determines the direction of the print run. In the art of printmaking, the first impression provides a point of departure from which to determine the life of the print and its potentially-changing system of matrices. Always entertaining, usually surprising and often eureka-inspiring, creating a new print’s first impression is a uniquely gratifying experience.

incunabula

From social contexts to incunabula to audiophiles, first impressions fascinate the artist, collector, psychologist and historian alike. Needless to say, first impressions of the collectible kind are highly valued and sought after. Some first and rare impressions in print include:

lathequarrymen

The Quarrymen album–1958. The one acetate copy resides in Paul McCartney’s collection. (On left: Percey Phillip’s acetate lathe used to produce original album recording.)

ladottamano

Michelangelo: La Dotta Mano

Published in 2008 by the Italian Gruppo FMR to coincide with the 500-year anniversary of Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, this artfully-crafted tome can be purchased for 100,000 euros. Read more about this book here.

‘Tis the Season

I’m a printmaker, and I’m into the holidays. Mostly because I’m into making cards. Actually, I think I might be more into receiving cards. This time of year I can’t stop thinking about Christmas card ideas. Just this past weekend I endeavored a “screen print your own holiday card” workshop at the INKubator PRESS, Kansas City’s brand new community print studio.  My favorite from the session is this goodie by Maura Cluthe

So, it’s not really Christmas-y, but it’s darn hilarious. Here’s some other winners from years past that I keep close all year round, just cuz they make me smile. Happy, Joyous, Merry Holidays you guys…

For The Love Of The Process

Althea Murphy-Price | Things Printmakers Like | Thursday, 04 December 2008

One thing printmakers like…process. If I’ve realized anything about printmaking it would be that its practitioners, young and old are innovators. Finding new ways to redefine the media for themselves. It so happens that these young innovators are using the process in outrageous ways that border on a hybrid form of printmaking and performance art. Whether, screen printing on pancakes or competing for printmaking supremacy in Jenny LeBlanc and Kyle Bravo’s Face Off , these printers are making us laugh and allowing everyone to enjoy the freedom of the media.

Check out these printers…what will be next?
